Boys jumping off a bridge
Capture 2 boys jumping off a bridge- writing assessment.PNGOne day, I was in my car and I see two boys jumping down, from the bridge to the sea with excitement and big smiles on faces. One looks like he’s doing a bomb and the other is doing a dive, they puts his hands up and heads down to the salty sea.

The cars are honking like a trumpets, I hear cars zooming past like racing cars as the air gets more and more polluted. I can hear the gentle movements of the salty sea, I can almost feel the rocky concrete on my feet. I see the fluffy white clouds reflecting on the glistening sea, I smell the salty sea as my car pasts them.

I think they have the most exciting day of their childhood and probably will tell their children in the future of all the adventures they had.

Tornados
A tornado is made up of cold air coming down, hot air rising up and strong wind in the middle. Tornados are sometimes called twisters. A tornado is a fast spinning tube of air that touches both the clouds and the ground. Most tornadoes have wind speeds less than 100 miles per hour, about 161 kilometres per hour. The most powerful tornadoes occur in the United States of America. Extreme tornadoes can reach wind speeds over 300 miles per hour, (483 kilometres per hour). Most tornadoes travel a few miles before exhausting themselves. Extreme tornadoes can travel much further, sometimes over 100 miles per hour, about 161 kilometres. The United States of Americas averages are around 1200 tornadoes per year, more than any other country. US States most often hit by tornadoes include Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Florida. In 1989 the deadliest tornado ever recorded in the world killed around 1300 people in Bangladesh. In the southern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a clockwise direction. In the northern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a counter clockwise direction. A tornado that occurs over water is often called a waterspout. Basements and other underground areas are the safest places to stay safe during a tornado. It is also a good idea to stay away from windows.

Book Review - The Loudest Beagle on the Block

Loudest Beagle on the block
Loudest Beagle on the block is a book about  a dog called trumpet. The owners named him that because of his loud howling.

When the owner plays the piano, the beagle howls. The owner is a girl in middle school and is going to perform in the talent show playing the piano.  But she can’t practice because trumpet howls every time she plays it. Can she practices enough to be in the talent show? I recommend this for ages 8-10 and I rate this book 8 out of 10.

The Blue Whale
The largest animals ever to have been on the earth are still living today.

The blue whale is much bigger than the largest dinosaurs. One blue whale measured nearly 34 meters and weighed more than 220 tones.

Everything about the the blue whale is big! Even its tongue may weigh up to four tonnes. They also call to each other in big voices which can be heard over 800 kilometers away. They are easily the loudest living creatures.

Because they are mammals, blue whales breathe air. This means they must come to the surface of the ocean to breathe. The ‘waterspout’ a whale blows out is not really water at all-it is hot breath and water vapour.

Mothers feed their young on milk. By the time they are a year old, the young calf may weigh more than 20 tonnes. They can live for up to 45 years!

Moment in time Mary Mackillop

Mary Mackillop Center
One day, my school went to Mary Mackillop Center in Mission Bay were the Josephites lived.

It’s lunch time at the Mary Mackillop center, so we got our bags and sat under a tree with our class. As I’m eating my lunch I saw the sisters throwing lollies on the fresh smelling grass. The children were trying to get the most lollies in the scramble. The children loved the scrambling and competing for lollies- it was fun although I was just standing and looking at them collecting their loot.

The green grass looks like a green carpet, soft and spongy.  As I sit on the grass I can feel the blades tickling my fingers as I lean over to rest. It is supports my back like my favorite cushion.

Screenshot 2014-11-05 at 10.34.03 AM.pngI can hear the loud sound of the waves coming from the beach. I can hear splashing sounds as the currents splash against the rocks. Birds are chirping as they glide in the wind to catch fish to eat with their hooked  beaks.

I can feel the rough concrete as I walked by firmly on the path. It is not even some portions are smooth and most of it are rough. I can feel the grits of the gravel on my shoes. Many children did not notice this.

Screenshot 2014-10-30 at 9.36.26 AM.pngI think today was fun because we met the Josephites nun and they told us how its like being a nun.

Facts about the earth

Facts about the earth
Screenshot 2014-10-30 at 10.27.09 AM.pngThe earth is made out of 4 layers called the crust, the mantle, the outer core and the inner core.

The crust is the outer and thinnest layer of the earth. It is made out of special kind of rocks that
is made out of a combination of iron and magnesium. It is 5 kilometers thick from the ocean floor and 70 kilometers from land where we live.

The second inner layer of the earth is the mantle, it is almost 3,000 km (kilometers) deep. On the top part of the mantel volcanoes are formed.

The third inner layer is called the outer core. It is 4,000-5,000 degrees celsius and did you know the inner core is so hot that it melts the metal of the outer core into liquid magma.

The next layer is called the inner core. The inner core is made out of lava, you might think lava is liquid but its so hot that it turns into a rock that is solid. The inner core is as hot as the surface as the sun.

Sasquatch the North American Bigfoot

Sasquatch, the North American Bigfoot

Screenshot 2014-10-29 at 10.19.57 AM.pngPeople claim to have seen Sasquatch in and around mountains of North America. People who claim to see him described him looking like a human but larger and hairier. Some people believe Sasquatch is the offspring of apes. They think there could be about 2,000 Sasquatch, but if there were that many there would be more evidence to prove Sasquatch the North America Bigfoot is real.

People have made plaster casts of Sasquatch’s huge footprints to prove he is real. Because of his big feet people started to call him Bigfoot. A scientist with casts of footprints believes the footprint was made by a Sasquatch 2.5 meters tall and weighing 350 kilograms.

Our own story

Losey gets lost
Characters:Losey, David, Nancy
Setting:Friendly Neighbourhood

Once there was a Dog called Losey, and a man called David, they were best friends. They lived in a friendly neighbourhood, with one of Davids close neighbours, Nancy.

One day, David woke up to feed Losey but when he went to the backyard he released Losey was gone, so he knocked on Nancy front door and said “Have you seen Losey?” “Sorry I haven’t” Nancy replied.

So David went home, got on his computer and started printing out flyers about Loseys weight, height and the type of breed.

When he made 30-40 flyers, he started knocking on his neighbours door and handing them out, one by one he handed them around the neighbourhood.

When he finished handing out the flyers, he went home and looked at all the pictures of Losey. He thought of memories he had with Losey.

The Next day, David heard a knock on the door one of his neighbours said” Is this your dog?” “Yes! Yes!” said David “Well here you go” said his neighbour.

Later that day, David thought of having a welcome home party for Losey since she was gone for quite a long time.

So David invited Nancy to come over for Loseys welcome home party, David bought a pizza, Nancy bought a bottle of soda and they all had a great time chatting and playing fetch with Losey.

Moment in time walking to school

Walking to school
One day, I am walking to school. I see a man walking closer and closer to me, as he is just beside me I know he is my teacher. With a big grin on his face, he says ‘What is your favorite subject” “my favourite subject is maths”. The cold winter wind is blowing all the snow to my face, the trees and leaves are almost frozen, my face is almost as cold as snow. The snow covers my feet, it’s so hard to walk through the snow, I feel like a big heavy giant as I stomp through the snow.

Computers

Computers
Computers, computers are amazing things because they are used as a tool for teaching and learning and as well in business. They help children to learn and most adults use it to do work.

They very important nowadays because if we lose computers millions of people can lose their jobs or it will be harder for them to work. My mum is an accountant that means she looks at how much money the company gets from what they sell.
Google and Google chrome is the most popular website in the world. On computers you can communicate on twitter, facebook, email and gmail, you can even watch videos, research and shop online.

Sometimes computers are not so great, because you need to know to be cybersmart to prevent online bulling. To stay safe on internet you need to be vigilant and go on safe websites. You need your parents guidance and support.

If you go on computer for a long time it hurts your eyes and will also give  you a headache. Many people use this tool in many jobs for long use. They should rest their eyes and do exercise to prevent damaging their eyes and getting headaches.

I think computers are great tools and makes life more fun and easier. Think of this, if we all use computers we can save tonnes of thousands trees we use for paper and keep our natural resources safe.  I think everyone should have one and don’t forget to be cybersmart.

Butterflies

Butterflies

Butterflies are very interesting creatures and they have been through some harsh weather. The monarch has been blown across the Tasman sea to New Zealand.
The monarch is the most popular butterfly in New Zealand. Most butterflies die because they often haven’t reached land and fall into the water. There are lots of different butterflies like the blue moon,
yellow admiral, red admiral, painted lady and the monarch.I think butterflies are very wonderful creatures.

Moment in time boys building sandcastle

Boys building sandcastle
One hot sunny day, I went to the beach and I see two boys building sandcastles. They have buckets and spades and they’re almost finished, “I think we need one more castle to complete the sandcastle kingdom’”. They hold their buckets and spades in the air as they say “we’re finished, yea!”

The sun is so strong that the light goes through the thick, fluffy, white clouds reflecting on the warm, salty sea and burning the sand into ashes. The clouds are as fluffy and luscious as meringues, the sand is as soft as a babies bottom. The small currents of the waves are calming and quiet, and the seagulls chirp in the background.

I  see the families on the hot sand, as their feet burn they quickly dive into the currents of the sea to cool off.

Virtual baby

Virtual baby says a first word
BabyX is a 3D computer-animated child.  She was born in the University of Auckland in the year 2012 and has just said its first word.

She can see, reach and respond to what is in front of her and she is learning more as she gets older like a real child. A video by the university shows she can read out words that are in front of her and recognize pictures. She can smile because she is artificially-intelligent releases if she has done something right or if something is funny.

I hope that the technology inside this computer will help children read and maybe used by teachers in schools.

Screenshot 2014-09-09 at 11.55.53 AM.pngAt this stage they don’t yet know if BabyX will be allowed to keep growing older, or whether she will have her learning limited.

Marae visit

Te Tahawai marae

On Monday 18th of August 2014, years 5, 6, 7 & 8 from Christ The King Catholic School went to Te Tahawai marae. We had to be at school by 8.40am and we got on the bus at 8.50am, we went on a double decker bus. When we got there we walked to the front entrance, the powhiri (a Maori welcome) started, a lady did a karanga (call). Then we walked up the stairs to the porch and took off our shoes, the maori tradition, it is rude to step foot in the marae with shoes or hats.

After that, we went inside the marae and Bronson did a thank you speech. Three of the year 7 and 8 girls did a karanga, then the ladies of the marae made connections with them. Later we sang songs, washed our hands and had kai (food). After that, we had activities. We split into two groups. Group one was drawings first, we got a picture of a legend. We had to draw the carvings on it. There were carvings of a legend for each city in New Zealand. The next activity we did poi, we did a simple dance with the poi and song. Then we thank them and said good bye, we put on our shoes and hopped in the bus. As we were in the bus we sang songs all the way to school, when we got to school it was 12.00 so we had lunch early. I think Tahawai marae is the best marae in New Zealand and I recommend it to all ages, female and male to visit this marae.

Finding China

Finding China

I have been travelling in China, and I have notice some amazing things. My mum is Chinese and did you know China is a very populated country there are 13 million people in Shanghai. In China there are no doors in toilets, no sets on toilets and there are no curtains in showers. In China there is a strict rule, one child per family but my mum has three sisters and one brother because they were born before the rule was made. In Shanghai, often both of their parents work that’s why most kids are boarded in the school.

In winter it is very cold, the temperature dropped below zero. In China school start’s at 7.00 and ended at 5.00 and kids have one hour to do homework, Chinese kids work a lot harder than other children. Each day they had to do a hundred push ups then a hundred sit-ups and run around the track fifty times.

In china people eat steamed buns, vegetables, meat, egg, duck, prawns, pork, soup, gravy, rice, sometimes hot  chocolate and every day an orange and a banana.
I think China is beautiful and the most hard working place, if you have a chance to go to China you should definitely go!
